القريةThe village

Alurush sits on the Sarawat highlands at the far north of Al-Namas governorate, in the lands of the Bani Shahr. Its houses are built from mountain stone, its lanes are paved with it, and around it lie the peaks and terraces its people have lived among for generations.

Its forts and houses rise four to five storeys, built of stone and roofed with juniper wood and mud. Residents have kept its architectural character, each family restoring its own house or fort, until the village became a landmark that draws more visitors every year.

Al-Namas municipality paved, restored and lit its lanes, and today it hosts heritage events that bring residents and visitors together.

Al-Ainah well and tunnel

The old well the village grew around. A tunnel cut sideways into the mountain linked it to the castle, so people could fetch water unseen by enemies.

Jareen Al-Adah

The community square where Eids, weddings and every occasion were held. It still gathers people for National Day, Eid and folk performances.

Inside an Alurush house

The village was built from the mountain's own stone. People spent months preparing it, breaking the rock and carrying it by camel to the site, and every builder, carpenter and smith was from the village. Stone is heavy, so rooms were roofed with juniper trunks and then sealed with mud.

A house usually has three storeys, from the ground up:

  1. السُّفلAs-Sufl: الدور الأرضي، وفيه البقر والغنم.: the ground floor, home to the cows and sheep.
  2. المخزنThe store: لحفظ الحبوب وأعلاف البهائم.: for grain and animal fodder.
  3. المعزّبةAl-Mu'azzabah: المطبخ ومكان الأسرة، ويُصعد إليها من فتحة صغيرة تسمى «الخوخة».: the kitchen and family room, reached through a small hatch called the khawkhah.

A single door closes on several houses, the upper rooms are linked by bridge-like walkways, and wooden stairs climb between them. Houses were built close on purpose: whoever left for Hajj or a journey knew his family would be looked after. Once peace came with the Kingdom's unification, people began building outside the old village.

The community met in the mandah, a gathering hall where they listened to poets, traded market news and grain prices, and settled disputes until they reached one decision.
